Unlock 5.0: Fearing second wave of COVID-19, Odisha decides to keep schools closed

Amid speculation of second COVID-19 wave hitting the country from mid-December, the Odisha government has extended the closure of schools in the state.

Fearing a rise in COVID-19 cases, the Odisha government on Friday, November 6 decided to keep schools closed in the state till December 31. However, it allowed online classes to continue as usual and asked the teaching, non-teaching staff to come to schools if needed.

The state government issued an order saying," “Teaching/non-teaching staff may be called to schools for online teaching/tele counselling outside the containment zones.”

Amid speculation of second COVID-19 wave hitting the country from mid-December due to drop in temperature, the Odisha government extended the closure of schools till the end of December month.

While speaking to the media, Odisha School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash said that schools for students of class 9 to 12 were supposed to open in November but keeping in mind the rising speculation of the second COVID-19 wave in December the date has been extended.

According to Dash, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had also expressed his concerns on schools reopening amid the possible second wave due to which the government reached upon the decision of extending the date and safeguarding the students from the risk of coronavirus. 

Meanwhile, 50,357 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in India in the last 24 hours. This has taken the overall tally in the country to 84,62,081.

During the same period, 53,920 new discharges were reported, while the total active cases reached 5,16,632 and the cumulative recoveries now stand at 78,19,886. And with 577 new deaths, the overall toll has mounted to 1,25,562.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data, Maharashtra has reported 1,03,007 total active cases, 15,62,342 recoveries and 44,965 deaths so far while Karnataka has reported 33,338 total active cases, 7,97,204 recoveries and 11,347 deaths due to the infection.
