Opposition leaders from various parties lauded Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman on Friday, as he was being released by the Pakistan government at the Indo-Pak border Wagah.

Punjab CM Captain Amarinder, a veteran of the armed forces, took to Twitter to say that he would have gone to receive him but stopped short due to prevailing conditions. "Though I would have loved to go and receive him, I did not do so in view of the existing Defence protocols," said the Congress leader.

Congress communications chief Randeep Surjewala also took to Twitter to say that Abhinandan was India's pride and honour. "Your indomitable courage & dignified poise in face of adversity has won hearts & minds of all Indians," said Surjewala.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to welcome the IAF pilot to "home sweet home". Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu said that he was happy to see the safe return of the pilot. "AP salutes the brave and spirited patriot," he tweeted.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Singh Yadav, too, welcomed the 'braveheart'. "We will never forget the supreme sacrifice of our brave martyrs and their families. Pak should walk the talk on dismantling it's homegrown terror networks. I hope that peace prevails," Yadav tweeted.
