Amid the tensions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, a major revelation has found that China has hatched an espionage conspiracy against India whereby Beijing is spying over more than 10,000 prominent citizens including President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It has been found that prominent heads of Indian companies like Nykaa, Uber India, PayU, Flipkart, Zomato, and Swiggy are also being monitored.

A report by the Indian Express has found that a Shenzen-based company named Zhenhua Data Information Technology Co. Limited has been tasked with monitoring over 10,000 prominent citizens including President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others, for the Chinese Communist Party. The company calls itself a pioneer in using big data for 'hybrid warfare' and the 'great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation'.

The report claimed that those targeted also include venture capitalists, angel investors, founders and chief technology officers of the country’s promising startups and e-commerce platforms, and foreigner investors based in India. The focus is also on founders, CEO, CFOs, CTOs, and COOs of key sectors.

As many as 1400 Indian companies are on the Zhenhua database. The prominent faces being tracked in OKIDB include Heads and founders of Nykaa, Uber India, PayU, Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy among others.

Several payments, education, and delivery apps are also under Chinese surveillance. Also under watch are the tech startups in the urban transportation segment. Several promising start-ups and e-commerce platforms are also under the watch.

Payment apps such as Paytm, Razorpay, PhonePe, Pine Labs, Avenues Payments, and FSS payment gateway that had partnered with merchants like IRCTC, are under the radar.

Delivery apps that are under the watch are - Bigbasket, Daily Bazaar, Zappfresh, Fresh Meat Market, Zomato, Swiggy, FoodPanda, online meat delivery platforms; and now bike, B2B delivery platform for micro retailers.

Also under watch are Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT, Kanpur; and Professor Deepak B Phatak, IIT, Bombay, known for upgrading Aakash, advertised by its manufacturer as the 'world’s cheapest tablet'.

China has also spied on Zee News' Editor in Chief Sudhir Chaudhary. Notably, Zee News started a 'Made in India' campaign against Chinese goods and consistently reported against China's incursion on LAC.

Notably, Zhenhua also works with Chinese intelligence, military, and security agencies.

The development comes at a time when New Delhi and Beijing have been engaged in a standoff since April-May over the transgressions by the Chinese Army in multiple areas including the Finger area, Galwan Valley, Hot springs, and Kongrung Nala.

The situation worsened after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in violent clashes with Chinese troops in Galwan valley in June.

The talks between the two sides have been going on for the last three months including five Lieutenant general-level talks but have failed to yield any results, so far.
