UK police team to probe death of Briton in India

A team of the metropolitan police has left for India to investigate the suspected murder of an Indian-origin Briton who died in Punjab in 2007 in a road accident during a family visit.

London-based Manjit Kaur Kular was reportedly run down by a car in Punjab after going there for a wedding. The death was reported to be an accident but her family believe it was murder.

Her husband, Jagpaljeet Singh Kular, was charged with murder in 2009 but the case was dismissed at the Old Bailey.

She went to India with her family in October 2007 for the family wedding. But a few days later her body was found by the side of a road after she was fatally hurt in a suspected hit-and-run incident.

The BBC reported that relatives in the UK were not convinced that it was an accident.

Detective chief inspector Dave Manning said, "We were contacted by family members in the UK who were concerned that this wasn't an accident and there were some more sinister motives behind what happened to Manjit."

The team of officers has gone to Punjab for two weeks to liaise with Indian police and obtain more details about all the circumstances surrounding the death and hopefully help Mrs Kular's family.

"I hope after two weeks' investigation with the Indian authorities we will have a much clearer picture about what went on and we will be able to provide some more comfort and perhaps some closure for Manjit's family here in the UK," Manning said.

He said there may be people in the UK who could help piece together what happened to Kular.
