The police personnel shoot down two suspected militants in an encounter in Manipur's Bishenpur district.

Following a tip-off, police cordoned off a house in the area belonging to one Mohammad Mujibur Rahaman. The militants then started firing at the police.

Police confirmed that two suspects were killed in the cross firing.

"Suspected UGs (underground cadres) fired some rounds at the commandos and the commandos retaliated the firing. An encounter ensued at about 11.50 am at the campus of the house. After the encounter, the house and the adjoining areas were searched thoroughly in which two dead bodies were found to be lying, one inside a toilet and another inside the house," said Superintendent of Police of Bishenpur, Ningthoujam Herojit Singh.

The police also recovered two 9mm pistols, one grenade and some documents from the site.

The two suspected militants were later identified as belonging to the separatist group United Revolutionary Front (URF).Singh also said the two were suspected of being involved in two blasts in Imphal that left one and three non-local migrant labourers dead in different incidents on December 15 and 21 respectively.
