Two members of a gang allegedly duping people upto Rs4 lakh each with the promise of providing them jobs in the railways were arrested from Hazratganj area in Lucknow today.

The arrested brothers hailing from Amethi had called up 24 candidates for giving them "appointment letters" for Group 'C' and 'D' jobs when they were attested, ADGP (law and order), Brij Lal said.

They had taken upto Rs4 lakh (from Rs90,000 to Rs 4lakh) from the youths and had also conducted their medical examination in the Railway Hospital, Delhi charging extra Rs5,000 each, the ADG said.

The duo was to hand over the "appointment letters" before the DRM office here when they were caught. Forged appointment letters seized were signed in the name of chief personal officer, Northern Railways, Baroda House, New Delhi.

Police have identified the gang leader as one Abhijit Mukherji who claims to be on the Railway Recruitment Board, the ADG said.

The gang, which had been active for the past one year, had duped some 114 boys in this manner, Lal said.
