A new train is now likely to trace the journey of Lord Ram from Ayodhya all the way to the edge of the Indian subcontinent. The government is planning a rail route from Ayodhya, believed to be Lord Ram's birthplace, to Rameshwaram, where, according to folklore, he went to worship Lord Shiva.

"The railway ministry has started working on running a train from Ayodhya to Rameshwaram," said Lallu Singh, BJP MP from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh. Singh, who met Railway Ministry officials on Friday, said the train could be launched as early as July end.

"It will benefit pilgrims who come from down south to Ram Janmabhoomi to pay their obeisance," said Singh, who had made the proposal after he was elected MP.

Railway ministry sources said a proposal had been received and was being examined.
