Come July and you will see more hands to control the burgeoning traffic chaos in the city. The traffic department has already started recruiting volunteers for its traffic brigade; the two-day recruitment rally commenced on Friday at police stadium.

The chaos on the city roads has unnerved the traffic department to such an extent that it has decided to accept volunteer services from citizens. “Any candidate who clears the physical tests and the final interview will be deployed for controlling traffic in Ahmedabad,” said MM Anarwala, deputy commissioner of police, traffic.

On Friday, the heat was at its blistering best, but this did not stop the ‘would be’ members of the traffic brigade, expected to be on job from the third week of July, from coming forward in large numbers.

More than 2,000 youngsters participated in the recruitment rally, of which around 400 have been short-listed for the interview rounds. The recruitments will continue till Saturday and the finalists will later be taken on for a one and a half months training, Anarwala told DNA.

Despite trying weather conditions, enthusiastic participants underwent all the physical tests. “I gave my best shot and have cleared the test. I hope I am qualified and get placed as a volunteer for the traffic department,” said Rajendra Rathod, one of the participants.

The traffic department authorities will also pay an honorarium of Rs100 a day to the selected volunteers; they will also be provided with uniforms. “It’s all voluntary, no one will be forced to work. However, those who endeavour to help will be paid on daily basis,” said a source in the traffic department.
