Former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi's political journey has been as interesting and inspiring as the other top leaders of the state.

We can easily call him the third most important leader to emerge out of the 1974-75 Jaiprakash Narayan movement. Unlike Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar who were driven by the idea of socialism, Sushil Modi had a Hindutva bend and came from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad background.

Modi's first political achievement was in 1973 when he was made the general secretary of the Patna University Students’ Union (Pusu). His adversary Lalu Prasad Yadav was chosen the President. This was even before the JP movement had begun.

But Sushil Modi's foray into active politics began in the mid-1980s. And though there were BJP political stalwarts like Kailashpati Mishra, Tarakant Jha, and Lalmuni Choubey, Modi managed to carve a place for himself in the party as a young leader.

The 1990s however, did not have much for Modi to showcase as the BJP had very little to do in Bihar politics that was dominated by Rashtriya Janata Dal and its party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Though in 1995 the BJP emerged as the main opposition party Yashwant Sinha was made the leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly. But Sinha had to step down from the position after allegations emerged against him of being involved in the hawala scam.

Sushil Modi replaced Sinha as the leader of Opposition in 1996.

Soon the BJP formed an alliance with Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United to take on Lalu Prasad's RJD. After a long wait, the NDA alliance of BJP and JD (U) won the 2005 assembly election after which Sushil Modi was made the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.

He has held the No 2 position in Bihar for a very long time. It is argued that Modi very rarely asserted his position and began to find his fortunes tied with Nitish Kumar.

Sushil Modi was first chosen to the Bihar Assembly as an MLA in 1990. Thereafter he was again chosen to the assembly in 1995 and 2000. In 2004 he fought the Lok Sabha election from Bhagalpur and emerged victorious.
