Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Tuesday took a swipe at Narendra Modi government over Clean Ganga Mission and said that one should drink Ganga water to meet Akbar.

Singhvi's remark comes a day after he accused Narendra Modi of betraying the people of Varanasi by failing to fulfill his promises of cleaning the Ganga river, as pollution level was found to be more than that in 2014.

"There is a well known historical fact that Akbar used to drink only Ganga water because he believed it to be the cure of all ailments. The current scenario is such that if you want to meet Akbar you can go ahead and drink Ganga water," said Singhvi

On Monday, a map released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has indicated that most of the Ganga River water in the Uttar Pradesh-West Bengal stretch is unfit for drinking and bathing.

In August this year, the National Green Tribunal said that a meticulous monitoring and systematic approach was required for cleaning Ganga from Haridwar to Unnao. The green panel had said that innocent people drank and bathed in the river with reverence, without knowing that it may adversely affect their health.

The green panel, in a detailed judgment, had passed a slew of directions to rejuvenate the Ganga, declaring as 'No Development Zone', an area of 100 metres from the edge of the river, between Haridwar and Unnao.

Whereas, in 2016, the Ministry of Water Resources, in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court had made a claim that emperor Akbar drank pure Ganga water since the Mughals were aware of its healing effects.

In another tweet, Singhvi also targetted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister over the law and order situation in the state. "Yogi Adityanath says the law in order in UP is the best that it has been in 15 years. Possibly true because instead of FIRs there are direct shootings and the biggest criminals are now running the UP Government.

Earlier, Singhvi had said that the people of Varanasi and other cities along the Ganga river will never forgive the prime minister and his government. "Cleaning the Ganga was one of the major poll promises of the BJP ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha election...Going by the government's own status report, it looks very unlikely that it will be able to fulfil its promise," he said.
