The news of a fashion design course getting an accreditation from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), invited angry reactions from many students of the institute as also its alumni. The shock and restentment was evident on social networking site - Twitter.Beginning this academic year 2015-16, a collaboration of Whistling Woods International (WWI) and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) will come into effect. It will mean a TISS accreditation for various media and film-making courses offered at WWI and a fashion design course undertaken by the Whistling Woods Neeta Lulla school of Fashion. This bit of the collaboration has been a major reason behind the annoyance of TISS students and alumni. While most post-graduate students, currently away doing their research-oriented internships, were unaware of this development, the ones who were aware took to Twitter to express displeasure. A few students however had a different view with regard to the development.“TISS certifying media and communication courses is not surprising given it has a media and cultural studies department but I almost thought I had misheard when I was told that a social science institute would also be certifying a degree course in Fashion,” said Kirthi Rao, a second-year student pursuing a masters in Urban Policy and Governance at TISS, Mumbai.“Depends on who is getting the certificate, in terms of the student's background. Fashion, if it is for promotion of stuff like weaving and handloom, sounds fine,” said another student.
