Tiruchirappalli Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: Tamil Nadu Congress chief S Thirunavukkarasar is on the way to a massive victory in this central Tamil Nadu constituency. He leads by 3.48 lakh votes over DMDK's V Elangovan.

Final Result: Congress' SU Thirunavukkarasar defeats DMDK's DR. V Elangovan by a margin of 459286 votes. 

Election in Tiruchirappalli constituency was held on April 18 in the second phase of Lok Sabha election 2019. Polling in 38 out of 39 parliamentary constituencies was held in the second phase of the general elections.

Congress’ Thirunnavukkarasar and DMDK’s Dr V Elangovan were the key contestants in the fray in 2019 polls. Congress contested the election in alliance with DMK while DMDK has entered into an alliance with AIADMK. 

Tiruchirappalli Lok Sabha constituency profile

The two major parties in Tamil Nadu — AIADMK and DMK — entered into an alliance with a number of parties for the forthcoming elections. 

 AIADMK contested the election in alliance with BJP, PMK, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Puthia Tamizagam, Puthia Needhi Katchi and NR Congress whereas the DMK aligned with Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK. 

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan's party Makkal Needhi Maiam also fielded its candidate from Tiruchirappalli constituency.

AIADMK's P Kumar was the sitting MP who defeated M Anbhalagan of the DMK with a margin of close to 1.5 lakh votes.

Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 parliamentary constituencies where 7 of them including Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam have been reserved for candidates representing scheduled caste community. However, no seat here has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

According to the 2011 census data, Tiruchirappalli houses a total of 1,021,717 people out of which 507,180 are males and 514,537 are females. The district has an average literacy rate of 91.2%. The place is known as a leading engineering equipment manufacturer and economy here is majorly driven by retail shops and local business.

Tiruchirappalli Lok Sabha results in 2014, 2009 and 2004 

2014: P Kumar of the AIADMK received 458478 votes and he defeated M Anbhalagan of the DMK who only got 308002 votes. 

2009: P Kumar of the of AIADMK  received 298710 votes. He defeated Sarubala R Thondaiman Lalitha of the Congress who only got 294375 votes.

2004: L Ganesan of the MDMK received 450907 votes. He defeated M Paranjothi of the ADMK who only got 234182 votes. 

The state of Tamil Nadu has 39 parliamentary constituencies out of which seven are reserved for SCs (Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam). However, no seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the state. 

In 2019, EC had cancelled the election in Vellore constituency after a large sum of cash was allegedly seized from a DMK candidate's office in Vellore, therefore, out of 39, polling took place in 38 Lok Sabha constituencies only.
