An 18-month-old tiger died after it was run over by a speeding train at Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred near Bichia Gate railway track. A team of forest officers has taken over the body of the killed tiger. Forest Officer GP Singh said an FIR has been registered against the train driver, who is yet to be identified.

"The body bears injury marks. One of the legs was also cut off after run over by the train. A panel of doctors will perform the autopsy on Sunday to ascertain the cause of death," he said.

In the past too, several elephants have been run over by trains on this killer track. The Forest department has made several requests to Railways for disallowing trains on this track which passes through the dense forests of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.

Unsafe sanctuary

Though several instances of wild animals getting run over by trains have been reported on the killer tracks here, the Railways is yet to stop service on this track.
