CHENNAI: Three persons allegedly involved in organising online betting on the cricket World Cup have been detained here for questioning, police said on Sunday.

Krishnan, Jyoti and Nandagopal were rounded up at an internet cafe on Saturday by a special team, headed by Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore, following a tip-off from Nagpur police, they said.

The mobile phone call records of a bookie, arrested in Nagpur, had shown that he was frequently in touch with some persons in Chennai.

The bookies were said to be encouraging cricket buffs to bet online for their favourites using credit cards. After each match was over, the money was also transferred online, police said.
