Bihar has seen a high turnout of women voters in the last few elections — both Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha. In fact, political observers believe that female voters were the force behind Nitish Kumar's return to power for a third term in 2015 when the main poll plank was the implementation of total alcohol prohibition in the state.

Now, with the latest statistics of the Election Commission of India revealing that more number of women have joined the electorate as compared to men in Bihar, all political parties in Bihar have been compelled to especially address the issues and agendas of the fairer sex in the state.

As per the latest additions in the electoral rolls, a total of 5,15,800 new female voters have made it to the list as compared to 3,49,663 male voters. Bihar has a total of 7,06 crore voters in the state.

While all political parties are trying to tap this vote bank, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) seems to be leading the front. JD(U) is cashing in on the various sops launched for females in the last one and a half decades of its rule.

"We will not just remind the female electorate of the implementation of total alcohol prohibition in the state in 2016, which has brought peace and prosperity to their homes, we will also tell them about the social reforms undertaken by our CM for their benefit," said a senior JD(U) leader.

He added, "Our CM has also pledged to eradicate dowry and child marriage from the state, and the government is working on it."

After assuming power in Bihar in 2005, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had launched various schemes exclusively for girls — Cycle Yojana, Poshak Yojana, scholarships, apart from reservation for women in Panchayati Raj. Later, reservation for women in all government services were implemented and now the CM has launched Mukhya Mantri Kanyan Utthan Yojana where every girl child born in the state will get over Rs 50,000 at various developmental stages from birth to graduation.

While the BJP-JD(U) combine hopes to woo women by popularising the work they have done for them, opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress aim to highlight the "increased crime against women" in Bihar. "Everyday we hear of rape and other forms of violence against females. The Muzaffarpur shelter home case is just one glaring example. Safety and security of women will be our priority in the state," said a Congress leader.
