Revealing a major lapse, security establishments are said to have received 13 intelligence reports about potential attacks on security forces ahead of Wednesday's attack on C-60 commandos in Gadchiroli. The last six alerts were issued on March 21, April 3, April 9, April 11 and April 23 (two on the same day). All of these indicated that Maoists had hatched a detailed plot to target security forces within the limits of Kukheda and Purada police stations in Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra. "It was a major security lapse," admitted a senior IPS officer.

Intelligence reports say the 40 Maoists — who were involved in the attack on the vehicle carrying 15 Quick Response Team (QRT) commandos — belong to Platoon 15 of Tipagad area committee of the banned outfit Communist Party of India (Maoist). Sixteen people were killed in the blast on Kurkheda-Korchi road.

Ten of the militants have been identified, including the platoon commander Dunga. However, security forces have no clue what Dunga looks like.

The remaining nine militants have been identified as deputy commander Raja, Madhu, second commander Vinod, Rambo, Samita, Sujata, Swapna, Sharda and Vijay Tulavi.

Two days prior to the attack, top Naxal leader Bhaskar Huchami had reportedly called a meeting of Platoon 15 and shared details of the attack meant to avenge the death of 40 Naxals killed in two operations by security forces in Kasnasur in 2018. Sources said the militants were tracking the vehicle carrying the commandos as they headed to inspect the 25 vehicles owned by a construction firm earlier in the day which were torched earlier in the day. The Elite C-60 team was specifically set up in 1990 to tackle Naxal violence.
