Terrorists snatch gun from varsity guard in Jammu and Kashmir

Suspected terrorists on Wednesday snatched a rifle from a policeman guarding the University of Kashmir at Hazratbal in Srinagar. Security forces rushed in reinforcements to the area and an operation has been launched to track down the culprits.

The Kashmir Zone Police tweeted: "Rifle snatched from a guard post at Kashmir University near Rumi Gate which was deployed at university on deputation from Armed Police. Area is being searched. Suspects are being identified."

This is the second time in a month suspected terrorists snatched rifles from police personnel in the heart of the city. On April 26, armed terrorists stormed a highly fortified police post, disarmed the cops on duty and decamped with four assault rifles. On May 11, a Jammu and Kashmir policeman was killed when cops foiled a bid to loot weapons from a guard post in the Wadhwan area of Central Kashmir's Budgam district.

Official figures reveal that nearly 251 weapons have been looted by terrorists from security forces in the last three years. At least 76 weapons were later recovered by the forces. At least 90 accused have been arrested so far in these cases.

The weapons looted weapons include 35 AK rifles, 44 Insas rifles, four Carbines, 43 self-loading rifles, one light machine gun, five 303 rifles, one gas gun, 12 pistols, one Pica gun, two UMGs, 102 tear shells/grenades and one AR 41 rifle.

The recovered weapons include, 23 AK rifles, 25 Insas, four Carbines, 10 self loading rifles, one light machine gun, two 303 rifles, one gas gun, six pistols, one Pica gun, two UMGs and one AR 41 rifle.
