Terrorists, one of whom was burqa clad, attacked a police station in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Sunday, killing one policeman and fleeing after security forces retaliated. The slain policeman was identified as Constable Saqib Mir.
The incident occured in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Heavily armed terrorists opened fire indiscriminately at the Shopian police station, forcing alert sentry stationed there to retaliate. One of the cops on sentry duty received gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead.
The police has registered a case and an investigation is underway. “We lost our brave colleague Saqib Mir today in a terror strike at Shopian. We stand by his family and support each other at this crucial juncture. Our rich tributes to the martyred jawan for his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty,” the Kashmir Zone Police said on Twitter.
The incident came just nine days after terrorists abducted and killed three policemen from Shopian. Over 38 policemen have been killed in the state this year, the highest in 12 years. This marks a remarkable escalation of violence compared to 2017 when 32 policemen were killed.
The incident also comes a day after Pakistan Army violated ceasefire and tried to push in a group of terrorists under a cover of heavy firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Figures released by the Ministry of Home Affairs revealed that 2,855 incidents of cross-border firing occurred in the last two-and-a-half years, in which 109 people were killed, including 35 Army and 21 BSF personnel.
