Based on specific intelligence inputs, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Babgund area of the south Kashmir district in the wee hours of Saturday, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorist fired upon the forces who retaliated.

In the ensuing gunfight, the terrorist was killed, the official said.

He said the slain terrorist has been identified as Sabir Ahmad Dar who belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen. Some arms and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site, the official said, adding the gunfight is over.

This comes at a time when voting for the third phase of the urban local body elections is underway in the state.

Earlier on October 5, terrorists had killed two National Conference (NC) workers while threatening the people of the state against participating in the local elections.
