“There was no physical clash. There was some bitterness. There were some arguments and sloganeering. We have called in police and they have intervened. And the situation is now under control,” said Fayaz Ahmad Mir, registrar of NIT, Srinagar.
Tension has gripped the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT) after two groups of students clashed with each other after India lost the T20 semi-final against West Indies on Thursday. The administration has decided to close down the college indefinitely as a precautionary measure, in order to cool down tempers on the campus.
Eye witnesses said tensions started on Thursday evening when India lost the match and some people started bursting crackers. This angered students hailing from other states who took out a march on Friday unfurling the tricolour. Students said there was an altercation and some clashes between the two groups, prompting the administration to call in the police to prevent any escalation.
“There was no physical clash. There was some bitterness. There were some arguments and sloganeering. We have called in police and they have intervened. And the situation is now under control,” said Fayaz Ahmad Mir, registrar of NIT, Srinagar.
Police have rushed in reinforcements and a huge deployment of forces has been effected to ensure peace and order on campus. “We had to seek help from the police because it is a sensitive place. Kashmir is not an ordinary place and therefore the police had to be called in,” said Mir.
Data available puts the number of students enrolled in the college at 2,500 and most of them are from different states. The college administration has decided to close down the campus to avert any future clashes.
Late Friday evening the NIT administration issued a formal notification to close down the college and asked the students to vacate the hostels forthwith.
“In view of the prevailing indiscipline created by the students on April 1, the institute is closed till further orders. Students are therefore directed to vacate the hostels. The decision has been taken due to the denial of the students to maintain discipline even after repeated requests by the institute and well as the local administration,” read the notification issued by the Registrar of NIT.
