Indications are the five-member Justice BN Srikrishna committee, which submitted its report on the feasibility of carving a separate Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh to Union home minister P Chidambaram on Thursday, has struck a conciliatory note.

The report will be made public only on January 6 after consultations with other political parties in Andhra, but it appears that the committee has steered clear of taking a pro- or anti-Telangana stand and laid stress on reaching an amicable solution to the dispute.

“Consultations with eight recognised political parties [of Andhra Pradesh] will be held here [in New Delhi] on January 6,” Chidambaram said.

“In the state [Andhra], huge security has been organised to prevent violent reactions. But I assure people the deployment is purely precautionary. Security forces will remain in barracks and police stations. We don’t foresee any need for actual deployment,” he clarified.
