A Class 8 student in Yadadri district of Telangana committed suicide after he lost the election to choose the 'Class Representative' (CR) in school. He had come only second to a fellow classmate, a girl student, who stood first.

The child's death was discovered after a body, mutilated beyond recognition, was spotted by railway staff today morning on tracks near the Chityal Station. The Nalgonda Railway Police contacted nearby police stations on updates regarding any missing case which might match the body's profile of this body. Later, it was found that the boy was missing for the last two days from his home in Ramannapet Town.

Upon investigation by the Railway Police, it was revealed that this 13-year-old boy studying in a private school named Krishnaveni Talent School in Ramannapet had lost the CR elections to a fellow girl student. Even though he had lost the elections, the boy was still the second CR. However, it is alleged that the boy was belittled by his classmates "for losing the post to a girl".

"It's a clear case of suicide," said Nalgonda Railway Police Sub-Inspector B Achyutam, "In our investigations, we came to know that on July 16th the elections which are called the 'Model Elections' were held in this school to elect Class Representatives. This boy came second and he even told his father that he was depressed. But since the next day, he was reported to be missing."

The police said that a case has been registered under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which gives the police the authority to look into instances of unnatural death.

While the school staff refused to speak on this issue, child rights activists strongly condemned the holding of elections in schools from such a young age, citing the declaration of winners and losers can potentially have adverse effects on young minds. "What's the need to give it an election colour in school?" said Achyuta Rao, president of the Balala Hakkula Sangham, a Hyderabad-based community fighting for child rights, "How can any school even think of winners and losers, because just imagine the kind of pressure and depression this boy must have gone through. We demand the school management should be booked under Section 304 of the IPC."
