Days after gruesome daylight murder of an engineer in front of his pregnant wife, Telangana Police arrested seven people, including the suspected contract killer from Bihar on Tuesday.

Gangster Subhash Sharma and other members of his gang were allegedly hired by Maruti Rao for Rs 1 crore to murder his son-in-law Perumalla Pranay Kumar as Rao disapproved of the marriage.

Shocking CCTV footage of the incident telecast on national TV showed Perumalla Pranay Kumar walking out of a hospital in Miryalguda with his wife Amrutha Varshini when the assailant paced up an attacked him with a machete from behind, killing him instantaneously.

Earlier on Monday, Amrutha, from upper caste 'vaishya' community, had alleged that her father Maruti Rao and uncle were behind the attack as they strongly disapproved of her marrying a Dalit Christian. The names of some people with political links have also cropped up but police is yet to confirm their involvement.

The incident, which occurred last Friday, had also triggered protests by some Dalit groups in Nalgonda.

Amruta, who claimed her father insisted on her ending the marriage, said he will give birth to Pranay's child and ensure justice is done to him. She has also refused to return to her paternal home.

Pranay was an employee of a private firm, who had got married six months back in January.

The accused have been booked under sections 302 (Murder), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 120b (Party to a criminal conspiracy) read with 109 (Abetment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The FIR filed by the Miryalguda police states that both Amrutha and Pranay knew each other since class 10. After college, both decided to get married despite strong opposition from the girl’s family.

‘Amrutha told the police that they willingly got married and since they were majors, the police sent the couple back. Maruthi Rao sent elders to coninvce Amrutha, but she refused and stayed in Pranay’s house,” the FIR said.
