Police resorted to lathicharge on Saturday to disperse Trinamool Congress (TC) activists and bystanders who allegedly prevented them from producing a TC leader in court here. The police said they resorted to lathicharge when TC supporters stopped them from taking their leader Bamdeb Mondal to produce into a local court.

More than fifty bystanders and TC activists were in the police lathicharged them near Curzon Gate in the town. Mondal, Trinamool Congress' Burdwan district general secretary, was arrested  on Friday on various charges including murder. CJM, Shubhrokanti Dhar remanded Mondal into seven days police custody. Mondal, deserted CPI(M) to join Trinamool about two years ago, was kept in Sadar police station last night.
