Replying to a call attention motion brought by Opposition parties on the schemes announced for the welfare of transgenders in the state, Valarmathi said that while a proposal to give reservation for transgenders in education and employment was with the Central government, action would be taken on receiving proper orders.

The Minister said the state government was considering the proposal to give flats to 260 of the 638 registered trangenders in Chennai district through Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

Of the 4,579 transgenders, identified through a census by Tamil Nadu Aravanigal (Transgender) Welfare Board, 3,965 were declared as transgenders and 3,687 have been given identity cards, she said.

Listing out the welfare schemes in which some of the transgenders have been beneficiaries, Valarmathi said a total of 51 self help groups comprising 442 transgenders have benefited through financial aid from the government.
