Sarath Kumar was travelling to Tiruchendur near Nallur Vilakku, when the EC's team stopped him and checked his vehicle. That was when they discovered the cash.

It is reported that the actor-turned-politician was asked for a receipt for the cash. He stated that he did not have any supporting documents. Since he did not produce a receipt for the money in the vehicle, the cash was seized. The Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) has taken the cash and handed it over to the government treasury.

Sarath Kumar is standing for elections in Tiruchendur constituency. His AISMK party has formed an alliance with Jayalalithaa's AIADMK. He has been campaiging in his constituency for the May 16 elections.
