With the funeral of former President A P J Abdul Kalam slated on July 30 at Rameswaram, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced a public holiday on Thursday "as a mark of respect" to the departed soul.

The government "has decided" to announce public holiday on July 30 to private and government educational institutions and establishments under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, "as a mark of respect" to him, an official release here said.

The last rites of former President APJ Abdul Kalam will be held at his native place at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

The former President's mortal remains reached the national capital at 12.30 pm on Tuesday. 

President Pranab Mukherjee, PM Narendra Modi and other dignitaries paid respects on Tuesday.
