SMC will provide water to 20,000 EWS (Economically Weaker Section) flats built at Kosad. At present, the civic body supplies water for three hours in the area. However, now it plans to provide water round the clock with same pressure. Kosad houses slum-dwellers, who lost their home due demolition drives by SMC.

"Our plan is to bring 24x7 water supply from March 2012.  At present, work of building overhead tanks of 60 lakh litre water capacity is going on. Supply will start once this work is complete," JK Shah, head of hydraulic department of SMC, said.

According to Shah, Kosad has been selected for 24x7 water project, as civic body wants to give priority to developing areas in matter of providing basic amenities. After Kosad, facility will be taken to Vadod, another developing area of Surat.

While residents of Kosad are lucky they have to pay a price for it. SMC is going to install water meters for all connections and will charge according to it. Civic body has fixed a price of Rs2 per kiloliter (1000 litre) of water as charge. This will be collected in the name of user charges.
