Supreme Court dismisses plea for 10-year-old rape survivor's abortion
The survivor is 32 weeks pregnant.
The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a plea seeking its nod to terminate the 32-week-old pregnancy of a 10-year-old rape survivor.
A bench comprising Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud considered the report of the medical board that said termination of pregnancy would neither be good for the girl nor for the foetus.
The SC also suggested that the Centre set up a permanent medical board in each state to take prompt decisions in such cases.
The PIL was filed after a Chandigarh district court on July 18 refused to let the girl undergo the abortion.
Courts allow medical termination of pregnancy up to 20 weeks under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and can make an exception if the foetus is genetically abnormal.
The victim was allegedly repeatedly raped by her maternal uncle who was arrested by the police following a complaint. The incident was reported when the girl was taken to a hospital by her mother after she complained of severe stomach ache on July 15.
