Sugar worth Rs66 lakh seized in Ahmedabad

Even as prices of sugar are rising, the city supply department swooped down on a warehouse in Aslali and seized 2200 quintals of sugar worth of Rs66 lakh. The sugar stock belongs to a unit of Coca-Cola at Goblaj in Kheda district. According to official sources, the department initiated search operation in the Jyoti warehouse in Aslali and seized the sugar, which was lying unaccounted for and stored without providing information of it to the supply department. According to norms, the stockist can only store sugar 15 times its requirement for 15 days after its purchase. However, during the search it was found that the sugar was lying in the warehouse since December last year. According to sources, the owners did not inform the supply department of Kheda or Ahmedabad about the unused stock. Officials have  initiated action against those responsible for this occurrence. Last week, the supply department had seized sugar stock of more than Rs2.5 crore from Jetalpur, on the outskirts of the city.
