A suspected terrorist, who was also traveling in the car, was captured alive by the police.
Terror revisited the summer capital city of Srinagar on Friday when car-borne Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists attacked a party of Jammu and Kashmir Police's elite Special Operation Group (SOG), killing a sub inspector and injuring a Special Police Officer (SPO) at Zakura in the city suburb. A suspected terrorist, who was also traveling in the car, was captured alive by the police.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when SOG party, which had gone on an operation, intercepted the car near Zakura. Terrorists on board however opened heavy fire in which two cops including Sub Inspector Imran Ahmad Tak were injured. They were taken to the hospital where Imran succumbed.
Hailing from Udhampur district of Jammu, Imran, 31, was a 2010 batch officer of the Jammu and Kashmir police.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone Munir Ahmad Khan said the party had gone for an operation when it was attacked. "They had gone for operation and there was a shootout between the militants and SOG party in which unfortunately Imran got injured. He was taken to hospital but he unfortunately succumbed. One SPO got injured when he was hit in the leg and he is out of danger," he said.
Khan said one suspected terrorist, who was also in the vehicle with the terrorists, has been taken into the custody. "He is being questioned. We will carry out further operation," he said.
Security forces have launched massive operations for the terrorists, who sped away in a car. "Yes we will get the leads. It was LeT. A lot of material has been recovered (from the car)," Khan said.
Paying rich tributes to the fallen officer, J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said violence is no means to achieve any goals. "Rather it tears apart the entire social fabric of the society," she said.
While condemning the killing of Imran, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said the sacrifices rendered by valiant police officers would be remembered forever. "The perpetrators of the violence would be dealt with sternly," he said.
Security forces on Friday busted a terrorist hideout in Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Forces recovered some Chinese arms and ammunition from the hideout, a defence spokesman said.
The action was based on specific information, Army sources said.
