Studying at Delhi University will get costlier from this year

Students, who have to spend extra money to complete the one additional year for the honours programme, should now brace for a fee hike, as many prominent colleges have decided to hike the fees for the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) by 5 to 10 %.

Students seeking admission to the science stream at St Stephen’s will have to pay around Rs 23,387 this year. The annual fees for science courses at the college was earlier Rs 21,655.

“We have hiked the fees for all the courses by 5 to 8 %. A student of humanities will now be paying Rs 21,519,” said K M Mathew, tutor for admission at the college.

Sri Ram College of Commerce has increased its fees by Rs 1,000 in all the courses.

“There is a marginal hike in the fees for all the courses in our college. It will not be a burden for the students. We have a lot of scholarships for students, so it’s not going to be difficult,” said P C Jain, principal of the college. Lady Shri Ram College has also hiked the fees for many of its courses.

“There is a small hike in the annual fees for the four-year courses. The fees for the journalism course will now be Rs 24,080,” informed Kanika Khandelwal, LSR media spokesperson. The annual fees for the course till last year was Rs 19,760. Ramjas College too has increased the annual fees.

“We have hiked the annual fees by Rs 1,500 for science courses and Rs 1,000 for humanities courses,” said college principal Rajendra Prasad. Colleges like Hansraj and Kiroli Mal too have hiked their annual fees.

Reacting to the fee hike, Delhi University Teachers Association member Abha Dev Habib said, “There is disparity between fee structures at various colleges. A government-appointed committee should look into the issue and there should be a mechanism to monitor the fees hike.” she said.
