The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) was among the first to hold the Class 10 and 12 exams in February this year, but is yet to declare the results which are now expected in June.
The delay has caused inconvenience to lakhs of students seeking admission to both Class 11 as well as undergraduate and technical courses in colleges as the enrolment process is already underway at most places in the state.
Initially, the Board had claimed that the exams were scheduled early so that the results could be published in time. The results of Class 12 examination, which was held between February 6 and 16, were expected in April last week or latest by mid-May. However, BSEB sources now say that the results are likely to be declared by the first week of June.
This will especially inconvenience students seeking admission at various engineering colleges across the country, where admission are underway or closing shortly. About 12.0 lakh students took the intermediate exams.
A BSEB source said the reason behind the delay is that the bar-coding of some answer sheets did not match while scanning them and it had to be redone. The BSEB had implemented several examination reforms including digitisation of the process in a bid to plug the loopholes which came to the fore in the last few years.
However, another reason for the delay in the results is that the Board is re-examining the copies of the meritorious students, and their physical examination is also likely, before the 'topper's list' is finalised. For the last couple of years, the BSEB has been hit by 'topper's scam' where non-meritorious students or those who fudged their name and age, made it to the rank list and it does not want a repeat of the embarrassing episodes.
The wait for over 17.70 lakh Class X students, who wrote their exam between February 21 and 28, is even longer as their results are expected only after the declaration of Intermediate results. However, admission to Class XI has already commenced at many schools following the declaration of ICSE Class X results.
