Striking doctors not doing their duty: Gujarat High Court

The Gujarat High Court on Friday came down heavily on the students of BJ Medical College and doctors of civil hospital for going on strike. The court observed that students and doctors who have gone on strike should be suspended. The court also pulled up the government for its inaction in maintaining hygiene at the hospital.

Ami Yagnik, advocate representing social activists Ela Pathak and Prakash Shah, on Friday prayed before the division bench of chief justice AL Dave and JB Pardiwala for direction to the state government to end the doctors' strike.

During the hearing, Justice Pardiwala observed that while people are dying in Ahmedabad of common diseases like malaria, the doctors had chosen to go on strike. "Doctors who have chosen to go on strike should be suspended," he said.

The court asked the petitioners to move an amended petition in the court on Monday making Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Gujarat Pollution Control Board and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority parties in the case.

Social activists had moved the court for direction to the state government to end to the doctors' strike. They prayed that the demand of the doctors should be conceded immediately so that the patients did not suffer.
