Two months after the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 came into effect, the state government has now released the statutes for elections to various bodies and authorities at state universities.

The statutes will help universities streamline the elections to fresh bodies like the senate and management council along with appointments to various important authorities like pro-vice chancellor, deans of various faculty, director (assessment and evaluation), elected members of senate, etc.

Universities in the state have been functioning with ad-hoc bodies without any Act in place as the previous act was dissolved in August 2015.

As per the statutes, universities will have to create a separate portal on its official website for election-related information and updates. Several universities including the University of Mumbai were functioning with ad hoc bodies since 2015.

"The statutes will help universities to fill all positions and elect bodies which would benefit students" said an official from Mumbai university.
