Rajnath Singh said all state governments have been advised to identify Rohingya, take their biometric information and report this to the Centre. The Centre will then take the issue up with Myanmar, Rajnath said.

The Union home minister was in Kolkata on Monday to attend the 23rd meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council. "Advisories have been issued to states. They need to identify them (Rohingya) and take their biometric information. After that they will send a report to the Central government, which will initiate action through diplomatic channels with Myanmar and get it resolved," he said.

Reacting to the Centre's decision to withdraw forces from Bengal's Maoist-hit areas, he said, "It is true. I admit that state governments need to be provided with Central forces. But there are compulsions of the Central government as well. Central forces need to be deployed in poll-bound states. So these have to be withdrawn from some other state."

He added that the government is equipped to deal with extremism and terrorism-related challenges, and would do all that is necessary.

He said Monday's meeting was very successful, and 26 out of 30 items were resolved. The chief ministers of West Bengal and Jharkhand were present at the meeting, as also were Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and Odisha finance minister Sashi Bhusan Behera.

Earlier, R Buhril, secretary, inter-state council's secretariat, said that topics that couldn't be resolved in the standing committe meeting would be taken up for discussion. "In the standing committee meeting, some states had said that when forces are deployed, they have to pay in advance for deployment. The home minister informed that the advance payment provision has been done away with following requests made by the states," Buhril said.
