India’s smallest state will see BJP and Congress faceoff in a post-Parrikar moment in Goa politics on April 23. South Goa is of one of the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Goa.
The constituency covers 20 assembly segments - Ponda, Shiroda, Marcaim, Mormugao, Vasco-Da-Gama, Dabolim, Cortalim, Nuvem, Curtorim, Fatorda, Margao, Benaulim, Navelim, Cuncolim, Velim, Quepem, Curchorem, Sanvordem, Sanguem and Canacona.
According to the 2011 Census, South Goa has a population of 6,50,537 people with 3,22,463 males and 3,18,074 females. The literary rate is 87.59% with a majority of the population (53.34%) following Hinduism.
The main showdown will between Congress' Cosme Sardinha and BJP's Sawaikar. AAP's Goa chief Elvis Gomes is also in the mix, but given his performance in the last state elections, one wouldn't be too optimistic about his chances.

In 2014, Narendra Keshav Sawaikar of BJP won the sea and reclaimed it from Congress’ Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco by a margin of 32,330 votes. The BJP had a vote share of 48.44% against Congress’ 40.56%. Churchill Alemao who had switched to TMC from Congress finished third. The voter turnout was 75.27% - four % less than Goa’s other constituency – North Goa.
In 2009, Congress’ Francisco Sardinha was the winner with a margin of 12,516 votes. The voter turnout then was merely 50%.
The Church has considerable influence in the state with a priest in the dock recently for saying Parrikar’s cancer was the ‘wrath of god’.
Election authorities in Goa have said cash amount, liquor and narcotics worth more than Rs 2.80 crore were seized in the coastal state.
The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), in a statement issued, said Rs 2,31,70,630 in cash was seized, but did not provide details.
The same day liquor worth Rs 28.16 lakhand narcotics valued at Rs 31 lakhs were also seized, the statement.
The total seizure value for April 17 stood at Rs 2.81 crore, it said.
The office further informed that the value of seizures made since March 10, when the election code of came into force, stood at more than Rs 8.46 crore.
The elections for the two Lok Sabha seats in the state - North Goa and South Goa along with byelections in three assembly segments - Mandrem, Shiroda and Mapusa will be held on April 2
