UP minister Srikant Sharma on Monday said Congress chief Sonia Gandhi should tender an apology as her party's youth wing activists in Kerala had hurt the sentiments of a large section of the society by butchering a calf in public.

"The Youth Congress workers committed a heinous crime. The real face of the party has come to light ... It has only divided the people in the name of politics and vitiated the peaceful atmosphere," he said.

"What happened in Kerala has humiliated a large section of the society ... If they have an iota of morality left, they need to apologise," Sharma, who is also the spokesman of the UP government, said.

He said it was an effort to "harm our sentiments" and demanded that Gandhi apologise to the people of the country.

He also asked why the people who return awards over other issues were silent on the matter.

"Today, the pseudo secularists are silent on this incident and their silence is shameful," he said.
