Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Friday described the political situation in West Bengal as "suffocating".

"In this state of West Bengal we have been thrown into a politics of violence. The way the state machinery is being run people are forced to keep off from politics," Chatterjee said at a meeting by the Birbhum district Left Front."We are now passing through a suffocating situation," the former CPI(M) leader said alleging people have no democratic rights. Chatterjee further alleged, that through unprecedented "State-sponsored torture" and by applying administrative power, "The rule of party" has been thrust on the masses citing incidents in recent time, but did not elaborate
