The Congress leader shot off a letter to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, saying, "There had been a design to harm communal atmosphere of the state whenever there are elections. Because of this, about 100 riots were instigated before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections."

Some hardliners are out to do the same before the 2017 Assembly polls, Mehdi said.

The Congress leader also said that promises made by SP during polls about betterment of minorities were yet to be fulfilled. Mehdi asked the chief minister to follow the Karpoori Thakur formula, which has been implemented in Bihar to ensure development of minorities and the backward class. He also alleged anomalies in the UP Public Service Commission selection.

"A negligible number of persons from the minorities have been selected while over 50 per cent of those selected belonged to a particular caste," Mehdi said.
