According to officials, the severed head was found on Platform No.1 of the station in the wee hours today.

"DNA and forensic samples, etc. have been taken. The head was found at the extreme end of Platform No.1," GRP inspector (Mathura Junction) Pankaj Lavania said.

He said it is "strange" that only the severed head was found because, had it been a case of a train accident, the body, too, would have been recovered. The woman's gold earrings were found intact, he added.

"It appears that she was beheaded somewhere and her head was left on the platform," he said. The severed head was not wrapped in any cloth or other material, police added.
