Ending a brief lull, Pakistan troops resorted to heavy firing and shelling on the Indian forward positions and civilian areas along the Line of Control (LoC), leaving a 65-year-old woman injured in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara.

The incident occurred at 11 pm on Thursday when the Pakistan army violated the ceasefire and fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward positions and civilian areas in the Taad area of Tangdhar sector.

A 65-year-old woman was injured when she was at her home. Identified as Noor Jehan, she was immediately rushed to the Sub District Hospital Tangdhar for treatment.

"Ceasefire violation occurred late in the night and a 65-year-old woman was hit in her leg," said Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, Superintendent of Police, Kupwara,

The Indian Army immediately swung into action and retaliated in equal measure to silence Pakistan guns. The exchange of firing continued for at least 45 minutes.

However, at 4.30 am on Friday, Pakistan again resorted to firing in the same sector. The Indian Army immediately retaliated to silence Pakistani guns. "There is absolute calm on the border since 5 am", said Shriram.

In another incident, a teenage boy was injured in the Gulpur sector of Poonch district on Thursday. The Army said it was not a ceasefire violation but a normal engagement on the LoC.

Official figures revealed that 633 ceasefire violations were recorded along the LoC and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir in the first two months of 2018. Of these, 432 incidents were reported from the Line of Control and 201 on the International Border. Ten security personnel and 12 civilians were killed in these violations.

Last year, there were 860 ceasefire violations along the LoC and 111 incidents on the International Border. Twelve civilians were killed and 59 others were injured in these incidents in 2017. Six Army personnel and four BSF men were also killed and 18 Army soldiers and 22 BSF jawans were injured in these incidents.
