The police station, where JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhatacharya are being held, witnessed emotional scenes on Friday when the duo were confronted with Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the students' union of the varsity who was arrested on February 12.

According to police sources, the duo greeted Kanhaiya with 'Lal Salaam' and hugged him before settling in to face the interrogators. In the first round of questioning, Kumar was confronted with Khalid and Anirban separately and then the three were grilled together.

Delhi police had applied for custody of Kumar on Thursday on the ground that he was needed to be confronted with the other two JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya in view of the discrepancies in their statements regarding the controversial JNU event.

"The duo are aware of the fact that Kanhaiya Kumar was targeted by a mob at Patiala House court. Naturally they seemed concerned about his well being. They got emotional," said a police official. The three were then asked questions in connection to the event held on February 9, a date that marks hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Police officials, however, added that Kanhaiya has till now maintained that he knows Umar only in the capacity of a fellow student of the varsity. While Umar and Anirban are ex-members of Democratic Students Union, Kanhaiya, the president of JNU students union belongs to ASIF, the student wing of Communist Party of India.

In fact, Kanhaiya's counsel while opposing the latest police custody said that there was no connection between Kumar and the other two students arrested in the case as they belong to different student wings.

According to another police source, the duo have also informed investigators that they are not 'anti-nationals' as described by some politicians."They are not entirely cooperating with the investigators. They said that they were communists and their ideology precedes ideas of nationalism. When asked to identify other accused in the video, the two did name few persons but the ones raising slogans were not identified. There are some masked persons in the group and some people who apparently are not from JNU," the officer told dna.

Police also told dna that while Kanhaiya denied organising the event Khalid has so far denied having indulged in any anti-national sloganeering. Anirban had at one point during interrogation challenged claims that the slogans pointed out by the police were anti-national in nature. Kanhaiya has so far maintained that on February 9, he came out of his room only when he got to know about a possible confrontation between two groups over the event inside the campus.

Both Anirban and Umar have been grilled for several hours ever since they were placed in police custody following their midnight surrender to South Delhi police.
