The Supreme Court asked the Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday not to take any coercive action against Major Aditya Singh, named in an FIR for last month's firing in Shopian where three civilians had been killed.
A bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra sought an explanation from the state police, also issued notice to the Centre and asked Attorney General KK Venugopal for his assistance in the case.

"This is a very serious issue. There is an operation going on currently," senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said representing the father, and apparently referring to Monday's terror attack in Srinagar.
Major Aditya is with the 10 Garhwal Rifles. The JK police have accused the Garhwal unit of murder, attempt to murder and endangering life.
The Lieutenant Colonel has said that his son was merely doing his duty but was "wrongly and arbitrarily" named in the FIR. The plea said that the soldiers opened fire only to impair — and provide a safe escape from — a savage and violent mob engaged in terrorist activities.
