SC refuses to suspend Surupsingh's sentence
Maharashtra Transport Minister Surupsingh Naik, who was awarded one-month imprisonment along with Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Khot for contempt, on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking suspension of the sentence.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal directed that the review petition along with an application for suspension of sentence shall be heard in the chamber before the summer vacation.
Senior Counsel Ranjit Kumar pleaded before the court that if his clients were arrested by the police as per orders of the court, the review petition which was being filed in this court would become infructuous.
The Supreme Court had sentenced Naik and Khot to one-month imprisonment for clandestinely giving licence for operation of six wood-based industries in 2004 despite a ban.
When the licence was granted for operating the sawmills by them, Naik was Environment and Forest Minister and Khot principal secretary in the ministry.
