The Saradha Chit Fund Scam is a multi crore-rupee scam, agencies say it would be around 2,000 crores but both investigating agencies - ED and CBI are yet to reach a conclusion on the exact amount of the chit fund scam.
In a major setback for former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, the Calcutta High Court on Friday vacated its order granting him protection from custodial interrogation or arrest in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.
The court observed that further protection from custodial interrogation by the CBI would mean interfering with the investigation.
While Kumar's counsel argued that his petitioner – Kumar had been targeted and singled out, the court stated that such allegations are not true.
Vacating the previous court order on protection from arrest would allow the probing agency – CBI to take Kumar in custody and interrogate him, also allowing them to arrest him.
Hours after the court withdrew his protection, a CBI team comprising one inspector rank officer and one sub-inspector rank officer reached his residence on 34, Park Street and served him a notice. Sources in the investigating agency say that as per the notice, he has been summoned and asked to appear before them tomorrow i.e. Saturday at 10am.
Rajeev Kumar, who is currently the West Bengal CID Additional Director General, was part of a Special Investigation Team set up by the state government to investigate the scam before the Supreme Court handed over the case to the CBI in 2014, along with other chit fund cases.
