CBI will soon approach the Home Ministry seeking sanction to prosecute two former Intelligence Bureau officials as it is finalising its supplementary charge sheet in the Sadiq Jamal encounter case.

Official sources said the agency will also send request to Maharashtra government seeking sanction to prosecute two Maharashtra Police officials as well. They said role of the two IB officials then posted in the Maharashtra Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, state unit of IB and officials of Maharashtra will be part of supplementary charge sheet in the alleged fake encounter.

The sources said CBI has found that Jamal, who was killed in 2003, was allegedly targeted by Gujarat Police on the basis of fake input and profile generated by the IB official then posted as Assistant Director in the SIB. The agency has accused eight Gujarat policemen, including two retired officers of criminal conspiracy and murder in the encounter case.

The agency had said in its first charge sheet, filed on December 22, 2013, that the encounter was stage-managed and he was kept in illegal confinement of city crime branch. The CBI named Deputy Superintendent of Police Tarun Barot, inspectors Jaysinh Parmar, Irshad Ali Saiyed and Kishoresinh Vaghela, sub-inspectors Ramji Mavani and Ghanshyamsinh Gohil and constables Ajaypalsingh Yadav and Chhatrasinh Chudasama in the charge sheet.

Sadiq was allegedly shot dead on November 13, 2003 near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda area in Ahmedabad by police officers on the ground that he was a Laskhar-e-Taiba opera ive, who was on a mission to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi and VHP leader Pravin Togadia. The Gujarat High Court had in June 2011 transfered the case to CBI following a petition by Shabbir Jamal, brother of the victim.
