Ahead of its crucial September 16 state executive meet, the Janata Dal (United) has said that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be the faces of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar for the 2019 general election.

The change in stance comes almost three months after its national executive meeting in Delhi, when it had announced that party president and CM Nitish Kumar, "should be projected as a united face of the NDA as he is the tallest leader of the ruling alliance in Bihar and that the NDA constituents should fight the poll under his leadership".

JD(U) state president Bashistha Narain Singh said Nitish had carved out a special identity across the country through his developmental works as the Bihar CM. "Both the PM and CM will be the faces of NDA in Bihar in 2019," he said and added that the party will discuss strategies to strengthen its base for the Lok Sabha polls at Sunday's meet.

That the JD(U) has toned down its stance of "Nitish being the face of the alliance", or its claim to being "the Big Brother in the saffron alliance" indicated that an agreement had been reached on the much talked-about seat sharing formula for the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, a source said. He added, "Only the top leadership knows what has been decided, but all allies are putting constant pressure on the BJP to make a formal announcement at the earliest, so that preparations to deliver a 100 per cent results can begin as soon as possible."

The source said that all eyes were on the BJP now for announcement of seats, which will most likely be done within a month.

A JD(U) source said Lok Sabha polls were to be the only agenda of discussion on September 16 meet, when the party president will directly address the functionaries to take stock of grassroots preparation, seek their feedback related to any requirements or developments, and strategise for the last few months of groundwork.

Changing Stance

The JD(U) had in June said party president Nitish Kumar should be the united face of NDA and that the NDA constituents should fight the poll under his leadership.
The party, however, has changed its stance for the 2019 Lok Sabha election ahead of its party executive meeting which is scheduled to take place on Sunday.
