RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has now taken back his earlier statement regarding the 'two-child policy' and has simply called for a new law to control the population of the country. He also took a jibe at the opposition parties saying those who were predicting an end of the RSS have themselves been destroyed.
Addressing an event titled 'Bhavishya Ka Bharat' in Bareilly, Bhagwat clarified, "I had only said the population growth is a problem as well as a resource. So it is required that a new policy should be drafted. This new policy will decide how many kids one should have. I did not make any rule as such because that is not my job. The government has made policies on this but we need more consideration on it. A law should be made with everyone's consent and should be applied to everyone."
The RSS chief said that there were many incidents in the history of the organisation when several people said that it would be their end but they have been disappointed. " We do not have to defeat anyone, we have no enemy. The people who wished for the end of the organisation have been destroyed. But there is no anger in our minds, those who go through all these propaganda tactics do it because of ignorance," he said.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Santosh Gangwar, who was present at the event, said, "We will work on the suggestion given by Mohan Bhagwat on population control."
Addressing a gathering at the Moradabad Institute of Technology (MIT) on Friday, the RSS chief had said that he will support any law that calls for two children only. Bhagwat added that the policy will be applicable for all and was not in relation to any 'particular religion'.
"We feel this is the need of the hour, though it is up to the government to take the final call on this. This law will not have any relation to any particular religion and will be applicable to all," said the Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the RSS, at a meeting of about attended by 40 senior functionaries of the volunteer organisation.
To back his assertion, Bhagwat had said that India is a developing country and that an uncontrolled burst of population growth here is not healthy for the nation's development.
However, controversies had erupted over the comment. Among others, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticised Mohan Bhagwat's "two children policy" on Saturday, citing that the country's major problem is unemployment, not population.
