The West Bengal state government has engaged retired IPS officer Rina Mitra as Principal Advisor, Internal Security for the state government.

An order confirming it has been issued by state home secretary Atri Bhattacharya on Tuesday. Interestingly, Mitra, the 1983 batch IPS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre has retired on January 31 was among the front runners for the post of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director. The order also said that terms and conditions of her service would be notified by a separate order. During her career Mitra has worked as Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Minsitry of Home Affairs.

Mitra’s appointment is being touted as a deliberate move by the Mamata Banerjee government at a time when there is a clash between the state police and the Central investigative agency.

The CBI-Kolkata Police clash is already out in the open since February 3 evening when CBI officials went to the Loudon Street residence of Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the multi-crore Saradha Group scam and were not only stopped but allegedly manhandled and detained by Kolkata Police officers.

Mamata had put up a three-day sit-in demonstration condemning the CBI visit to Kumar’s residence and the matter was dragged to Supreme Court which directed that Kumar could be questioned at a neutral place but could not be arrested.

Since February 9, Kumar had been questioned for 36 hours in five days at Shillong and on Wednesday the first phase of questioning was over and he is scheduled to return to Kolkata in an evening flight.
